What
is Phi Alpha Theta? We are very proud of Tulane University's chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society for History. Phi Alpha Theta was organized at the University of Arkansas on March 17, 1921. Since that time it has grown to over six hundred and fifty chapters in fifty states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and the Philippine Islands. Phi Alpha Theta is the largest, in number of chapters, of the accredited honor societies holding membership in the Association of College Honor Societies. It was one of the original three honor societies admitted to the association at its founding in 1945. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta has grown to more than 150,000 initiates since 1921. The International Society offers several graduate scholarships to its members. Varying in amount, they are available for students either just beginning or in advanced graduate study. An additional membership benefit is the International Society's placement bureau for college teaching positions. Membership is also recognized by the U.S. Civil Service Commission as a credit qualifying the member for grade GS-7 (rather than GS-5). The Tulane Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta Members of the Tulane Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta have served both the chapter and the national organization, and our chapter has been recognized many times by the International Society for its activities. The Tulane chapter has hosted the society's Regional Conference numerous times. At several of those conferences, members of our chapter were recognized for their presentations of 'outstanding' undergraduate and graduate papers.
